GaN-based semiconductor materials have been used to fabricate LEDs that have lead to the realization of high-efficiency LED backlights for TV and mobile displays. By using advanced light-extraction structures, advanced GaN blue and green LEDs devices that exhibit external quantum efficencies higher than 70%, and 42%, respectively, have been fabricated. Fundamental physics of GaN emitters and the promise of direct-view Micro-LED-based Red-Green-Blue LEDs for flexible and transparent displays will be discussed.
